- Abstract
The article "Sectional analysis of linguistic fluency in learner language: The whole is less informative than its parts" presents a corpus-based study on the linguistic fluency of Polish learners of German. The authors examine three measures of linguistic fluency, namely articulation rate, filler particles, and pauses. They show that an analysis of fluency in sections provides a better way to understand similarities and differences within and between registers. The study uses the Wrocław Dialogue Corpus v.2 and focuses on learner data in two registers. The results show that the choice of register influences the fluency measures and that articulation speed is increased in free dialogues. The authors emphasize the importance of a theoretical embedding of the measures used and suggest that future studies should use the analysis of dialogue sections to conduct more detailed analyses of learner data.
