- Abstract
The present paper has analysed the binding capacity of insoluble humic acid on heavy metals Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cd, 131I anion from aqueous system. The tragic environmental cyan and heavy metal pollution on the Tisza river in Hungary in 2000 particularly accelerated such investigations which directed for the elimination ofpollution. It is well known that humic acids are widely distributed in nature not only in the soil, river and lake sediments but in large amounst in coal, lignite and peat. The coal in Dudar (Hungary) has one of the highest concentration of humic substances. Humic acids as complex macromolecules have different functional groups to bind and remove different cations such as heavy metals. The aim of our investigation was to study the sorption of heavy metals by insoluble humic acid prepared from Dudar brown coal and to make a proposal for an applicable technique on the heavy metal elimination from polluted water. Our results suggest that insoluble humic acids form potentially efficient, cheap absorbent material to purify water from the heavy metal contaminant.
