- Title
Flower Tribes and Female Desire: Complicating Early Female Consumption of Male Homosexuality in Shōjo Manga.
- Authors
WELKER, JAMES
- Abstract
An essay is presented that challenges the purported disconnect between homosexuality and the 'shonen'ai genre. The author contextually examines the female readership of the magazine "Barazoku," or Rose Tribe. He focuses on the female readers of the magazine in the 1970s and 1980s in order to illustrate that some fans of the genre did indeed link it to the real lives of homosexual men and concludes that the genre is part of a larger sphere of consumption of image of male homosexuality.
