- Abstract
The article "Working on the Epic" by Dirk Westerkamp discusses the interpretation of Robert Brandom's book "A Spirit of Trust". Brandom considers Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit from a semantic-pragmatic perspective and interprets Hegel's method as pragmatist. He argues that the world can only be adequately understood when it is placed in the context of shared conceptual practices. Brandom also recognizes a semantic holism in Hegel's work and emphasizes mutual recognition and normativity in linguistic practices. The text deals with the interpretation of Brandom's work "Making it Explicit" and his engagement with Hegel's conceptual realism. Brandom argues that normative status and objective conceptual norms are mutually dependent and that the ontological structure of lawful facts can only be understood in terms of concepts. He extends Hegel's objective idealism to a pragmatic ideal realism that emphasizes the unity of theoretical and practical reason. However, the text criticizes Brandom's lack of interest in the chapter on reason in the Phenomenology of Spirit and his thesis that Hegel's conceptual realism can imagine the world without subjective representation. The text discusses the conceptual reality in Hegel's philosophy and the pragmatic interpretation by Robert Brandom. It is argued that Brandom's approach of equipping Hegel's conceptual realism with normative-pragmatic tools could strengthen the critique of the subject-object-intentionality schema. It is also pointed out that Brandom underestimates the contradictory aspect of Hegel's negativity. The text concludes with the question of why Brandom does not address the chapter on reason in Hegel's Phenomenology and argues that Hegel's conceptual realism unfolds its full power in this chapter.
