- Abstract
The art of textile printing Is millennium old. Centuries back people colored fabric using colors found In nature. They looked not only beautiful but were long lasting and safe. With the advent of chemicals and Its II use In printing fabric, however, things took a different turn. The soft delicacy and harmony of natural colors that formerly characterized Indian fabrics gave way to brilliant tints produced by synthetic dyes and pigments. Indian dyers and printers found the imported synthetic dyes and pigments cheaper to use mainly because of the simplified process of application, easier standardization, wider variety of shades and good wash fastness. Tbe methodology adopted to find out the awareness level of harmlul chemicals and preference for purchase/ sale, 10 textile experts, 50 fashion experts and 150 consumers were Interviewed. Not all chemicals used In the process) however, were safe; In fact, some were highly toxic and hazardous to health. It Is true that they form a critical part of the global economy but they also happen to be one of the greatest threats to our safety and security. This trend of using these harmful chemicals, unfortunately, has continued unabated till today. During the survey It was found that while a fairly high percentage of textile experts are aware of the dangers, fashion experts and consumers have only limited knowledge and do not give It much thought or Importance. There Is also a misconception. Most think that the alternative, namely, eco friendly printed fabrics, are expensive and dull.
