- Abstract
This investigation analyzes the most relevant socioeconomic characteristics of the beggar population on the cities of Barranquilla, Santa Marta and Cartagena. The nature and extension of this article search to offer a more clear vision of an unknown social problem in these three cities of the Colombian Caribbean. The content of this article shows that beggar is not a new social problem, along human history there are repeated mentions on it, it is a complex phenomenon, which primary causes are related to vital shortcomings that poor people face. The most frequent shortcomings would be the lack of access to education and health services, the vulnerability they present in situation of crisis and social exclusion. Empirically, with this study it is shown that this is a growing problem in these capital cities, product of the displacement country- city, of family violence and drug abuse in relatively young population.
