- Abstract
Objectives: To identify guidelines on breastfeeding and which people in a mother's social life provide them, bearing in mind that the people in a woman's social life can influence the introduction of different foods into the child's diet before it is six months old, and to review how these guidelines influence their decision-making. Methods: A qualitative study conducted in a pediatric outpatient clinic of a university hospital situated in the city of Rio de Janeiro during the period from September to October 2008. The subjects were twelve mothers. The technique used was the semi-structured interview. Data analysis was adopted to analyze the thematic content, leading to the emergence of four categories: a) The guidelines the mother received from health professionals, b) The introduction of other foods prior to six months of age under the guidance of health-care professionals c) The introduction of other foods prior to six months of age under the guidance of family members d) The introduction of other foods prior to six months of age under the guidance of community members. Result: health professionals, family members and community members were the people who influenced the mother in the feeding of her child. Conclusion: The study highlighted the need of health professionals: to review their conduct in relation to the experiences of women who undergo the breastfeeding process; to encourage and support not only the mother in the breastfeeding process; to identify family members who can support the continuation of exclusive breastfeeding; and to exploit the knowledge and beliefs of female nurses in the practice of breastfeeding.
