- Abstract
Objective: To identify the function of nurses in the process of hospitalization of children, taking into account the emotional difficulties experienced by them. Method: this study uses exploratory, descriptive, bibliographic research, conducted with a qualitative approach, held in the Library of Health (LILACS and BDENF). After the data collection, an exploratory, selective and critical reading was done and a thematic analysis was performed. Results: the following categories emerged: Children's emotional difficulties in the hospitalization process, and the importance of the nurse's performance in order to decrease the effects caused by hospitalization. Conclusion: we conclude that hospitalization and the consequent procedures constitute unpleasant and painful experiences for children, causing fear, anguish, loneliness, sadness, etc. Because of a lack in mature emotional resources, children's responses to these situations may be negative and traumatic. Therefore, the nurse along with the team must value humanized care, attending to children's emotional needs and not only on technical procedures, in order to create mechanisms that may ease their suffering. In this way, inserting humor, playfulness and family presence, become effective instruments for decreasing stress and make hospitalization less traumatic.
