LA SERIE LEGIONARIA DE SEPTIMIO SEVERO: MUESTRA DE FUERZA MILITAR A TRAVÉS DE LA MONEDA DE FINALES DEL SIGLO II D.C.

- Abstract
Septimius Severus made a legionary coin series during the first years of his reign. After the typological analysis of it, it is shown that the presence of capricorns on the base of the military standards is not exclusive of the legio XIIII Gemina, as neither the laurels of the legionary eagle. Considering, among others, the Marcus Antonius and Marcus Aurelius precedents and the study of ancient sources, the Fitz’s and Vermeeren’s thesis are revised and, thanks to a quantitative analysis, we propose that this series was a commemorative show of military force.
