- Abstract
The article discusses exhibitions in the Thailand and Singapore Pavilions at the 2009 Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy, each dealing with escapism. The Singapore exhibit parodies early films that show Western understandings of Singaporeans. The Thailand exhibit offers a parody of a travel agency which parodies the exoticism and stereotypes of smiling Thais. Singapore artist Ming Wong presents re-enactments of films such as "In Love for the Mood" a parody of the 2000 film "In the Mood for Love," that plays on gender, race and identity. The Thailand exhibit focuses on the understanding of Thai-ness as gentility which suppresses the diversity of Thai peoples. Part of the exhibit parodies anodyne-sounding promotional language that actually lures people to sexual tourism.
