The author presents insights on the so-called hidden curriculum in the medical field, wherein learning occurs by means of informal interactions among students, residents, faculty and other healthcare team members. Topics discussed include the efforts of the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine (SSOM) to address professionalism and the hidden curriculum and a medical suite in Reston, Virginia involving a colonoscopy patient, his gastroenterologist and his anesthesiologist.
