HIGH HOLY DAYS IN HONOLULU -- 1919.
- Abstract
The article discusses the highlights of the first Jewish religious services in Honolulu, Hawaii held in 1919. Attended by about 60 persons, the Rosh Hashanah service was conducted by Victor Harris of Honolulu. The chants were sung by Mrs. J. A. MacGaughey, the wife of a Presbyterian minister, Mrs. L. S. Rothschild, wife of the chairman of the congregation, and Harris. Addresses were delivered by Harris and Mr. A. E. Larimer, secretary at the Young Men's Christian Association. During the celebration of the Day of Atonement, Governor Charles J. McCarthy was one of the speakers at the service on Yom Kippur. He highlighted the effort to establish Judaism in the island.
