- Abstract
This article highlights the annual meeting of the Conference on Jewish Social Studies held on November 17, 1987, in honor of Salo W. Baron, an emeritus professor who occupied the Miller Chair for Jewish History, Literature, and Institutions at Columbia University. It is generally recognized that by calling his magnum opus: Social and Religious History of the Jews, Baron has made a singular contribution to the analysis of Jewish historiography, far beyond the works of Heinrich Graetz's Geschichte der Juden and Simon Dubnow's Weltgeschichte des Jüidischen Volkes. Baron is also keenly aware of the tragic dimensions of Jewish History, in which he related Christian-Jewish confrontations. The Conference was founded by Professor Baron, together with Morris Raphael Cohen, Albert Einstein, Harold Laski and others, at a time when the world-wide Nazi propaganda and the spread of antisemitism had also begun affecting the U.S. It is fitting for the members and guests of the Conference on Jewish Social Studies to open its annual meeting this year on November 10th--to remember what the date of the 9th to 10th of November 1938 represents in history. Those days of November, almost 50 years ago, are popularly called Kristallnacht--meaning The Night of the Broken Glass. Let us remember that what led to the events of the night of an anti-Jewish pogrom in Germany and Austria, when 200 synagogues were set on fire, 7,500 Jewish shops were looted, innumerable Jewish institutions destroyed, and 30,000 Jews sent to concentration camps. That date is to be remembered as the onset of major Nazi atrocities, more vicious than during the preceding five years since the ascent of Hitler's regime in 1933, all of which led to the Final Solution--the destruction of European Jewry.
