MANAGING THE OPIOID CRISIS.
- Authors

- Abstract
The construction industry is currently facing a significant opioid crisis, particularly affecting construction workers. These workers are twice as likely to have a substance abuse disorder compared to the general population, and they account for about 25% of fatal opioid overdoses among all workers. The connection between the construction industry and opioids is often due to job-related injuries, as workers are prescribed opioids at a higher rate than the general public. Efforts are being made to prevent workplace injuries, educate workers about the dangers of opioids, and provide resources for treatment and recovery. It is crucial to address the stigma surrounding addiction and mental health in the industry and create a supportive and understanding environment for workers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that construction workers are five times more likely to die by suicide than from a job site injury, emphasizing the need for mental health support within the construction industry. The article includes visual aids such as graphs and photos to draw attention to this issue.
