- Title
GENETICALLY MODIFIED PLANTS AND REGULATORY LOOPHOLES AND WEAKNESSES UNDER THE PLANT PROTECTION ACT.
- Authors
Montgomery, Emily
- Abstract
The article examines the regulatory ambiguities and shortcomings in governing genetically modified (GM) plants and recommends innovations that would aid in identifying risks associated including toxicity, allergenicity and plant turning into wild weeds. It highlights the regulations set forth by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) in context to the U.S. Plant Protection Act (PPA) for genetically modified organisms (GMO). It recommends the distinct regulatory changes in policies and structures that will mask the existing loopholes and provide a better insight. It further concludes that though short tem and small changes can be addressed under the PPA for GM plants however an overhaul of regulatory structure for GMOs is requisite.
