The article examines nutrition therapy in kidney disease. In the early part of the disease, the goal of nutrition therapy is to retard the progression of disease and preserve function. In the later phase, the goal is to prevent the metabolic abnormalities of renal failure or to treat those that have developed. In children, nutrition therapy has the extra goal of supporting growth and development.
