- Abstract
The article discusses the politics and government in Kyrgyzstan. Under the presidency of Askar Akaevich Akaev, the country has acquired the reputation of being the most democratic and progressive of the newly independent states in post-Soviet Central Asia. Akaev foster interethnic peace through the policy known as national harmony which accords the various nationalities a generous degree of autonomy in cultural matters. However, Kyrgyzstan encountered problems and its roots can be traced back to the early 1980s, when a revival of national values began in several parts of the Soviet Union.
