- Abstract
Maintaining correct tundish steel temperature is crucial for successful casting operations. Historically, operators have relied on dip-type thermocouples for liquid steel temperature measurement during casting. However, this method has limitations, as it cannot provide continuous temperature monitoring throughout the casting process and requires manual intervention, limiting the number of readings per heat. This can lead to undetected temperature abnormalities and potential issues like choking or breakouts. The caster shop has faced frequent casting failures due to temperature-related problems, partly attributed to inconsistent liquid steel temperatures from ladle furnaces. To address this issue and improve temperature control, the shop decided to trial an online tundish temperature measurement system as an alternative to dip-type thermocouples. The system successfully met predefined performance criteria during the trials, establishing itself as a promising replacement for conventional thermocouples. This paper aims to provide a concise account of the shop's experience with the new tundish steel temperature monitoring system.
