- Abstract
The relationship between the use of oral contraceptives (OCs) and the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been extensively studied and the risk of developing RA as a result of OC use is reported to be minimal. In this study, the influence of OC use on disease outcome as measured by the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) was investigated in an inception cohort of inflammatory arthritis patients, most of whom fulfilled the criteria for RA over time. Although the effect was small, the use of OC was actually associated with a beneficial outcome.
