- Abstract
Human evolution is a controversial issue, since it may be contrary to the opinions of many people. Also, when presented, it can be understood as the main way by which biological evolution has developed: "lower" forms evolving into "higher" forms, with the "progress" being toward the human species. In order to assess whether the high school biology textbooks approach the human evolution, and if in this approach, they present content that may reinforce anthropocentrism, an analysis of this material was performed. For the research, we used the books approved by the National Textbook Program in 2012. We observed that the books, in their contents on human evolution, present both ideas that can strengthen anthropocentric conceptions, as other ideas that are opposite to these. The ideas that reinforce the anthropocentric conceptions are represented mainly in: (1) diagrams showing the relationships among the current primate species, that place humans in the upper right corner of the images, (2) biological classification that can be paraphiletic, simply to keep the human isolates in the Hominidae family and (3) presentation of fossil hominin species as if they existed only to become human
