The article focuses on perceived risks posed by the proximity of New Caledonia by way of exploring attitudes and opinions conveyed in the Australian press at certain key points in New Caledonia's history. Topics covered include the Britannia Group as one of the early names given to the group of islands off the east coast of New Caledonia, the French Annexation on September 24, 1853, and the revolts by certain Kanak tribes against French rule from 1878 to 1879.
