An essay is presented concerning the desegregation of the University of Virginia in the person of African American student Gregory Swanson. It describes the conflict between Rhodes scholar and former editor of the college newspaper the "Cavalier Daily" (CD) Staige Blackford, Jr. and activist Sarah Patton Boyle, and former University of Virginia dean Ivey Lewis and newspaper "Raleigh News and Observer" columnist Nell Battle Lewis over southern ideology, the acceptance of African American students to the University of Virginia, and the end of Jim Crow
