- Abstract
The article discusses efforts to prevent biosecurity breaches at laboratories. The Pirbright research center has been identified as the source of the Category 4 pathogens that caused the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Surrey, England in the summer of 2007. According to Dutch biosafety consultant Per Staugaard, to ensure safety, there is a need to use common sense and to carry out a proper risk assessment. The facilities of the British Health Protection Agency at Porton Down use various agents, including those that could, in theory, be used for bioterrorism, thus reinforcing the need for stringent safety requirements.
