- Title
The Myth and Reality of Slavery in Salem, Connecticut.
- Authors
Stark, Bruce P.
- Abstract
The article looks at the history of slavery in Salem, Connecticut. It references the article "Rewriting Slavery's History" by Maria Hileman which was published in the June 10, 2001 issue of "The Day of New London". The author is critical of the article's claim that a large plantation with 60 families of African American slaves operated in the town during the 18th century. It is suggested the researchers behind the article drew on unreliable secondary sources and reproduced the factual errors found there. According to the author, land in question was owned by the Browne family of Massachusetts, who divided into several farms and rented to tenant farmers, some of whom leased 12 slaves owned by William Browne.
