- Abstract
The book "The Man in the Underground" by Slata Kozakova examines the type of masculinity in Russian literature of the second half of the 19th century. The author analyzes the nameless protagonist of Dostoevsky's "Notes from Underground" and argues that this character type occupies an outsider position and is defined by the absence of women. The study includes eight main texts, including works by Gogol and Andreev, and focuses on homo-hierarchical power relations. The significance of the coat and the role of women in the texts are also analyzed. Although the study receives criticism for its lack of consideration of the role of women, it still offers interesting insights into unstable masculinities in Russian literature.
