Abstract

The article features Shirley Chisholm, the first African American and the first woman to seek the nomination of a major party for the presidency of the U.S., and her political life. Topics covered include Chisholm's education and career background, the appeal of Chisholm as a political candidate and the radicality of Chisholm's politics. It also discusses how Chisholm's presidential campaign emerged during the apex of Black Power movement's involvement in electoral politics.
