Outside the Big Box: Who speaks for small business?
- Authors
Kazee, Nicole D.; Lipsky, Michael; Martin, Cathie Jo
- Abstract
This article reports on the political influence of the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) in U.S. public policy-making. Polls of small employers suggest they are more ideologically diverse than the political ideology of the NFIB. The authors suggest that the system of employer-based benefits has disadvantaged small business owners who do not have the organizational potential or the budgets to make cost-effective commitments to health and training programs. The NFIB have been very effective at blocking policies. The authors conclude that this is due to media image and appeal, single-issue coalitions, policy positions based on member preferences, and a close relationship to the Republican party.
