- Abstract
The article presents the author's views about joining American Society of indexers (ASI). For the past few months ASI national officers have heard how much trouble the local chapters are experiencing trying to find folks to serve as local chairs, secretaries, and treasurers. To find members to serve on the national Nominations Committee was as difficult as finding people to run for national office. Everyone is busy: family situations, work pressures, vacations, etc., the list goes on. Sometimes it is just not the right year for one to volunteer, and it makes little sense to take on a commitment one cannot honor. If one is new to the indexing field, one can really jumpstart one's career by getting involved in ASI. There are many roles within ASI both nationally and locally that one can take on without going through an election. Even if one just let the local officers know that one is willing to help out by planning a meeting, providing refreshments at a meeting, offering a meeting place, or writing for the local newsletter, one's participation will mean so much to the local chapter.
