- Abstract
The article discusses the social and economic dynamics of the area surrounding the U.S. Long Island Sound during the early colonial period, foregrounding the discussion with the experiences of English New World settler and soldier Lion Gardiner. Primary emphasis is given to the interactions between English settlers, Dutch colonists, and Native Americans, especially the Pequot Indians. The causes and implications of the Pequot War, which Gardiner took part in, are analyzed. Dutch domination of trade, especially the fur trade, in the area is also explained.
