- Abstract
In principle, the limits to which one can work in engineering are determined by the laws of nature. Thus, one cannot, using electromagnetic radiation (light, X-rays), define structures smaller than the wavelengths used, and cannot make materials stronger than allowed by interatomic bonding forces. These laws provide the theoretical framework for progress, and the objectives for development. However, what is achieved in practice is determined largely by the ability to control the variation that exists in materials, processes and people, when one tries to create products that are theoretically feasible, but difficult (or expensive) in practice.
