- Abstract
Over the past two decades, video laryngoscopy has become established in various fields of anaesthesiology. Due to the different blade configurations and the optimisation of video chip technology, the view of laryngeal structures in patients with both normal and restricted laryngoscopy conditions is improved compared to direct conventional laryngoscopy. Furthermore, the success in the first intubation attempt is higher when using a video laryngoscope instead of a conventional direct laryngoscope. In addition, the visualisation of the laryngeal anatomy through an integrated or external display enables structured supervision. Despite this large number of evidence-based advantages, video laryngoscopy is not routinely used nationally and internationally (e.g., for elective patients in the operating room). Therefore, the question arises as to whether video laryngoscopy should not be used for all tracheal intubations in a standardised manner. On the other hand, their use in intensive care or emergency medicine settings has been described as bein associated with an increased complication rate. Many questions about the use and standardised application of video laryngoscopy therefore remain unanswered. This review intends to consolidate the essential background knowledge about video laryngoscopy and critically ex-amines the current literature with regard to its application in the fields of an-aesthesia, intensive care medicine and emergency medicine.
