- Title
The Portland Vase revisited.
- Authors
Harrison, S. J.
- Abstract
The article writes a critique on D.E.L. Haynes' 1964 book "The Portland Vase" and Bernard Ashmole's 1967 article about the scenes depicted on the Portland Vase. The author accepts the view of Ashmole against Haynes that the vase depicts two separate scenes and not one continuous one. He also accepts Ashmole's interpretation of the first scene as the love or marriage of Peleus and Thetis. He argues against Ashmole's view of the second scene as the marriage of Achilles and Helen on the White Island with Aphrodite looking on.
