- Abstract
James B. Waldram's book, "An Imperative to Cure," provides an in-depth analysis of the cultural practices and medical knowledge of the Q'eqchi' Maya community in Belize. Waldram explores the Indigenous knowledge and practices of Q'eqchi' iloneleb' (Q'eqchi' medical practitioners) and their understanding of medicine. Through ethnographic research conducted over 15 years, Waldram highlights the integration of Q'eqchi' language, cultural aspects, and social conditions in their medical practices. The book also examines the syncretic aspects of Q'eqchi' medical practices, which combine Western medical knowledge, Catholicism, and Mayan spirituality. "An Imperative to Cure" is a valuable resource for scholars in Mesoamerican studies, medical anthropology, and Indigenous studies.
