- Abstract
In landslide-related disasters, the population is not always prepared for an emergency evacuation, nor are government agencies to assist homeless and displaced persons. Because of this context, it is essential to build local capacities for public agencies and communities living in areas at risk. This work applies a methodology that uses concepts from human sciences and engineering for the participatory definition and dimensioning of escape routes, in case of mass movements, supporting the process of preparing and responding to a disaster. The methodology was applied in Bairro Britador, in the city of Campos do Jordão - Brazil, which has a history of landslide events with the destruction of a large number of houses and fatal victims. The results showed that community participation provides qualitative improvements in civil defense plans.
