- Abstract
Agglomerations in industrial districts allow small and medium-sized enterprises to compete and survive in the dynamic and globalized market. This study aimed to define the concept of industrial districts, presenting its evolution over time and identify which are the existing models and their relations with sustainability. Three models were characterized: i) Marshallian model, ii) the Italian model; and iii) the eco industrial park model. It was found that, chronologically, both have evolved simultaneously with the concept of sustainability. The Marshallian model considers only the economic aspect, while the Italian model has evolved including social aspects and, finally, the eco industrial park model seeks harmony between the social, environmental and economic aspects.
