- Abstract
An essay is presented on the gendered rhetorics and conflicting cultural narratives imbedded in the ranchera song. It analyzes the aural, visual, and written rhetoric as well as the patriarchal and nationalistic nature of the ranchera music which encourage students to examine their relationship to a social text. The author states that music provide students a deeper understanding of the complex world which can lead to critical subjectivity and the negotiation of conflicting cultural rhetorics.
