- Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to identify those international journals of finance which offer authors the greatest chance of having their work cited. This was based on papers published between 1996 and 2004, by analyzing the number of citations for those papers up to 2012. Furthermore, a ranking of journals and papers was developed. Data for the study were extracted from the Scopus database. To characterize journals that concern finance, only those journals which contain finance or financial in their titles were considered. The Journal of Finance (JOF) was the only journal of which all papers had at least one citation. In contrast, 80.42% of papers published in Finance a Uver (FU) received no citation. The JOF also achieved the highest citation average, with approximately 61 citations per paper. This was followed by the Journal of Financial Economics (JFE), with approximately 50 citations per paper, and the Review of Financial Studies (RFS), with approximately 34 citations per paper. 51 papers received more than 200 citations, and 92% of those papers were written by more than one author. This analysis concluded that this method of measuring journal citations enables an understanding of which international journals of finance offer authors a greater chance of having their work cited.
