- Abstract
The article presents a study on the disease affecting Carica papaya in Democratic Republic of Congo and its association with the Moroccan watermelon mosaic virus (MWMV). It states that since 1997, a disease has started to spread throughout North Kivu, severely affecting the local papaya plants. The papaya plants affected by the disease exhibit symptoms such as yellowing leaves with mosaic patterns leading to deformation and shoestrings, and pink discolorations and tumor-like growths within the trunks. During September 2006, 47 leaf samples from papaya plants were tested using ELISA and electron microscopy (EM). Results identified MWMV in the leaf samples. However, further studies are needed to fully chracterize the virus and understand its association with the said papaya disease.
