- Abstract
Most of the facial and cranial bones do not develop from preformed cartilage. Instead, they arise by intramembranous ossification from a primitive mesenchymal membrane located near the nasal capsular cartilage and the cartilage of Meckel. Meckel's cartilage denotes the first branchial arch, which is related to the embryonic development of the auditory ossicles, especially the anvil and the hammer. It also serves as a frame for structuring the mandible, which develops around the cartilage through intramembranous ossification.
