- Abstract
The article presents information on Alopecia Areata. The histologic hallmark of alopecia areata is a peribuIbar accumulation of lymphocytes. This infiltrate is especially pronounced in the active phase of the disease. Although less dense, lymphocyte infiltrates can still be found in long-standing alopecia areata. Analysis with monoclonal antibodies has shown that 90% of these lymphocytes are T cells. It has been further demonstrated that this T-cell infiltrate consists predominantly of CD4-positive cells with a CD4/CD8 ratio of approximately 4:1.
