- Abstract
The early years of life are central to child development. The aim of the study was to evaluate sensory and motor development in high-risk premature infants through ITSP and AIMS. The sample consisted of 48 premature infants who were born in the University Hospital of Western Paraná (HUOP). Divided into two groups of both sexes: the preterm group with normal motor performance (> 25%) (G1 - 24 infants) and the preterm group with suspect and abnormal motor performance (between 25 and 5% and < 5%, respectively) (G2-24 infants). Comparing ITSP scores, G2 showed significantly lower scores than G1 for low-register indicative behaviors (p <0.0001), sensory sensitivity (p <0.0001) and sensory aversion (p <0.0001). G1 remained in the ITU and ICU for less days when compared to G2, but they did not have significant relevance when compared to the ITSP and AIMS. It is important to evaluate the motor and sensory profile of preterm infants because the integrity of the sensory system is essential for the proper development of motor function, since motor skills are refined through sensory experiences. This study suggests that the ITSP is a useful, practical scale and assists in the early identification of sensory information processing problems and that, if not diagnosed and treated, can lead to life-long impairment.
