- Abstract
The article discusses the history, biology and conservation of the Barau's petrel Pterodroma baraui, an endangered gadfly petrel found in the Reunion Island of southwest Indian Ocean. Barau's petrel was included in the list of endangered species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2008. The various age classes of the population of Barau's petrel are affected by several threats, including predation by alien mammals, light-induced mortality, and changes in nesting habitat. Another gadfly petrel that is endemic at Reunion Island is the Mascarene Petrel Pseudobulweria aterrima. The back and upper-wing coverts are one of the distinguishing characteristics of Barau's petrel.
