- Abstract
A retrospective study published in the International Journal of Dermatology examined the prevalence of malignancy and associated risk factors in patients with prurigo nodularis (PN), a debilitating skin disease characterized by itchy nodules. The study found that 27% of PN patients were diagnosed with concomitant malignancy, including non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and other types of cancer such as melanoma, ovarian, breast, lung, uterine, cervical, and colon cancer, as well as cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The study also identified increased age at PN diagnosis and the presence of pain as significant risk factors for malignancy development. However, the study had limitations due to its retrospective nature and sample size.
