The article offers a response by the author to reviews of his book "Sweet Land of Liberty: The Forgotten Struggle for Civil Rights in the North" published by Eric Arnesen, David Chappell, John McGreecy, and Amanda Seligman in the same issue of the journal. Topics discussed include discrimination and racism on the northern U.S. states, the family structure of African American families, the influence of black political organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and black radicals.
