- Abstract
The article discusses the use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (ITNs) as a method to prevent visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the Indian subcontinent. VL is a major neglected tropical disease transmitted by sand flies. The World Health Organization and governments of India, Nepal, and Bangladesh aimed to eliminate VL through early treatment of cases and vector control. The article focuses on a cluster randomized controlled trial (CRT) called the KALANET project, which distributed ITNs to households in high-incidence clusters. The trial found that the mass distribution of ITNs did not reduce the risk of L. donovani infection or clinical VL. The article highlights the importance of clarifying research questions and discusses methodological issues in evaluating vector control tools for VL.
