Gives updates from U.S. health agencies as of February 19, 2003. Stopping of a large safety study of the inhaled asthma drug salmeterol xinafoate by the Food & Drug Administration after interim results suggested an increased risk of life-threatening events in some patients; Report from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke on a study of brain tissue from patients who died after bone marrow transplants which has provided evidence that blood stem cells can migrate to the brain and grow into active gray and white matter; Research from the National Institute of Mental Health which suggests that a gene variant inherited by one third of all individuals alters a brain growth factor and inhibits important memory tasks; Encouragement of physicians by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to submit write-ups of medical errors to an on-line journal.
