- Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has attracted a lot of interest over the last few years äs a new technique with the potential for selective destruction of malignant tumors. It is based on the systemic administration of certain sensitizing drugs, which are retained with a certain degree of selectivity in tumors and can be activated by light to produce a local cytotoxic effect. For local tumor destruction by this method it is necessary to develop special light applicators and light control Systems. For the treatment of tumors in an in-vivo tumor mouse model, a special tube was developed. It provides a virtually homogeneous light intensity distribution within the irradiated area, and spares the adjacent tissue from radiation. A control unit detecting the power density within the fiber makes it possible to record the power density employed during treatment. Both Systems have been used in animal and clinical experiments for PDT.
