- Abstract
This research was performed to evaluate the impact of contraceptives in women using oral contraceptives, injectable contraceptives and Cu-IUD contraceptives on some liver enzymes. In this present study, activities of some liver enzymes: Alanine transaminase (ALT), Aspartate transaminase (AST), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP),Total Bilirubin and Total protein were measured in serum of users receiving combined oral contraceptive (n=30), injectable contraceptive (n=30), Cu- IUD contraceptives (n=30) and non-contraceptive users (n=30) were included as control. The results showed that ALT, AST, Total Bilirubin and Total protein were significantly increased while ALP was observed decrease significantly in users when compared with non-users. Therefore, evidence from the findings indicate that contraceptives has potential for impaired liver function and may lead to liver damage.
