- Abstract
In a different way from the STD 2002, in STD 2016 the Rotliegend is described in two versions. In "Rotliegend A" the same international time table as in STD 2002 and ESTD 2005 has been used. It is based on the radiometric age of 291 Ma for the beginning of the volcanism of the Donnersberg Formation done by Lippolt & Hess (1989). Version "Rotliegend B" is approved by the majority of the members of the working group Rotliegend of the Stratigraphical Subcommission Permian and Triassic of the German Stratigraphical Commission. The correlation of the sections with each other as well as with the ICC 2016 is based on biostratigraphical arguments as well as on lithofacial analogies, which are supported by radiometric data and the magnetostratigraphic Illawarra Reversal. The sections of the Saar-Nahe Basin and of the Thuringian Forest Basin serve as reference. Besides this, sections of selected basins are described to demonstrate the diversity of Rotliegend sections as well as progress in stratigraphy since 2012. This includes Hessian basins (Wetterau), Saale Basin, Flechtingen Block, Southern Permian Basin as well as sections of Southwest Germany (Black Forest), Ilfeld Basin, basins of Northwestern Saxony, Chemnitz Basin and Döhlen Basin.
