- Abstract
The article discusses the role of local newspapers as publishing platforms for poetry during the 19th century. Particular focus is given to the author's investigation into the amount of poetry published by individual local newspapers, using digitized copies. It is suggested that approximately five million poems were published in the English provincial press during this period. According to the author, poetry was an established genre within the larger category of newspaper writing and sometimes operated as a form of journalism. Other topics include working-class poets, the second Boer War, and crowdsourcing.
